Las Conchas Fire Burning at Ski Hill

Los Alamos, NM – Local  and Type 1 fire crews continue efforts to contain and control the approximately-60,000 acre Las Conchas wildfire as it approaches the Los Alamos Ski Hill area. Water tanks throughout the town site are at full volume according to Los Alamos Dept. of Public Utilities officials.

“We’ve greatly improved the fire fighting capability of the water distribution system since the Cerro Grande fire of 2000, with improved storage capacity and hydraulics” said Utility Manager John Arrowsmith.  “The Arizona water tank, built after the Cerro Grande Fire, with 8 million gallons of capacity is key for fire protection.”

At the 6 a.m. Emergency Operations Center briefing today, on-the-ground reports from firefighters described spotting fires in the Pajarito Mountain vicinity.  Officials reported, “There is fire across the Ski Hill, a slowly creeping fire across the top of Pajarito Canyon, rimming fire near camp May, and fire on Pipeline Road. The Ski Lodge can be saved and that’s why we’re there now, preparing the buildings….We are confident that we can protect structures because of the strike teams we have in place.”

The Type 1 Incident Management Team team brings improved communication and control capabilities on this effort, as well as increased manpower.  Later on Tuesday a second Type 1 Incident Management Team will be arriving, and an Area Command will be initiated.  Type 1 teams are interagency fire fighting teams working together with local, state and federal agencies.

Most of the residents of the Los Alamos townsite evacuated Monday under a mandatory evacuation order with an orderly flow leaving the community. Homes in “at risk” areas are being watered down by the Fire Dept. Continued notification to residents to evacuate is occurring via print and broadcast media, as well as individual home visits from law enforcement officials who make note of their location and contact information for follow up, should the fire spread to their location.

“Those who elect to stay at the Los Alamos townsite place themselves at risk. However, the safety of emergency responders who might be called on to rescue those who have not departed, is also affected,” said Deputy Police Chief Kevin Purtymun.  It is estimated that a very small
number of residents have elected to stay. Police are patrolling to ensure the safety of any remaining residents. No casualties have been reported in this rapidly evolving event, according to officials at the Emergency Operations Center.

Los Alamos County’s 311 Customer Care Center is open today from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. to assist and inform residents, county staff, emergency responders and others with safe evacuation and shelter information, as well as other community and infrastructure functions.

NM 502 westbound into Los Alamos is now closed to all motorists. Access is controlled and limited to official traffic until further notification.

The Cities of Gold hotel in Pojoaque offers shelter services for evacuating residents of the Los Alamos townsite. Cities of Gold also accepts pets. Many residents remain in White Rock following voluntary evacuations which began Sunday. Los Alamos townsite evacuees are advised against sheltering in White Rock, although White Rock is not at risk.

A Joint Information Center is operational for media inquiries about the fire. Members of the public are encouraged to tune in to Radio 1610, visit nmfireinfo.wordpress.com or www.inciweb.org/incident/2385/ for fire-specific updates, and to contact the 311 Customer Care Center at 311 from land lines or 662-8333 from cell phones or visit www.losalamosnm.us for community information.

ATTENTION!

Field crews continue to work.  New Mexico Gas Company believes, "all areas in Taos have been addressed."  So the next step to ensure natural gas relighting coverage is to have people who still lack service, for whatever reason, to call in-

Call If Your Natural Gas is Not Reconnected: Field crews continue their work, and report significant progress.  From Red River/Questa through Taos and south to Pilar:  At this juncture, please call the following numbers at New Mexico Gas Company if your natural gas service is not back on, 505-697-3335 or toll free: 888-NM-GAS-CO (888-664-2726).  If you cannot get through on the above numbers, call Taos Emergency Operations Command Center at 575-751-8123 or 575-751-8125.

From Kit Carson Electric in Taos:

1) An electric outage in the La Loma/Valverde areas, including some classrooms at Enos Garcia Elementary School, will occur today at 3 p.m., due to a system upgrade.  This outage should last approximate 30-minutes, affecting an estimated 100 service locations.  Kit Carson Electric indicates they need to be prepared for the added loads that have occurred due to the natural gas outage.

2) KCEC Collections have been suspended this week. No meters will be disconnected.

Radio Still Dominates In-Car

The Arbitron National In-Car Study finds that 96% of those who have driven or ridden in a car in the past month have used the car radio.  58% have used the CD player, 55% a cell phone, and 47% a cassette player.  More than 80% of 35-64 year olds say they spend most of their time with radio.

Highlights of the Arbitron National In-Car Study

  • Americans are in their cars an average of 15 hours per week, up 14% from 1990 to 2000.

  • The average commute to work is now 51 minutes round trip.

  • 39% say they spend more time in the car now than a year ago.

  • The greatest percentage of increase in time-spent-commuting is often in small and medium size markets.

  • In-car listening averages 2 hours and 12 minutes weekdays, and 2 hours and five minutes weekends.

  • Men spend more time in cars on weekdays.  It's about even between men and women on weekends.

  • Since 1999 in-car radio listening has increased.

  • 43% say they leave their car radio set to one station.

  • Almost all in-car listening is to pre-set stations.  People rarely change their pre-sets.

A great deal of shopping occurs on the drive home from work.  Afternoon commercials on radio can produce immediate results.
